Congo Square / with Wynton Marsalis & Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Congo Square Stage, Fair Grounds Race Course, 1751 Gentilly Boulevard New Orleans, LA Ticketmaster (800) 745-3000 Price: One Day $50/$40 Advance/Child $5
"Congo Square", a ground-breaking work written by Wynton Marsalis and Yacub Addy, debuted in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans in spring 2006 before a wildly enthusiastic audience in Congo Square (inside Louis Armstrong Park).
Three years have passed, this exceptional music has evolved, and "Congo Square" returns to play New Orleans, this time the headline act on the opening day of the 40th Anniversary of the one and only New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, on it's own Congo Square Stage.
Congo Square was the only place in America where African slaves were allowed to perform their own music and dance in the 1700s-1800s, establishing the roots of American music.
